The Botulinum Toxin (BT) Process—though most widely known as an acclaimed, respected procedure in the treatment of unsightly wrinkles—also boasts safety and proficiency in treating many other disorders and health conditions. The first medical application of the process occurred in 1980, when one Dr. Scott used it to treat a case of crossed eyes (strabismus), and it remains in wide use across varied disciplines, including ophthalmology, neurology, psychiatry, urology, and gynecology.
But BT’s most common application remains the treatment of those problematic facial wrinkles; according to the most recent (2018) figures, its total amount of revenue for aesthetics was $649 million in addressing myriad conditions, including forehead issues, crows feet, overly gummy smiles, chin-dimpling, and more. A list of its many applications would boggle the mind of the casual reader, and they are really too lengthy to detail in this blog’s introductory overview.
Suffice it to say that there have been several reports of treatment failure in recent years, in both the medical fields and for aesthetic treatment applications, the chief culprit being the development of neutralizing antibodies, a controversial approach not always supported in medical literature. It’s a complicated development that can compromise even the simplest procedures, often delaying the muscle recovery process, even to the point of delivering a negative outcome.
Treatment failure is lumped into two categories, of primary non-response and secondary nonresponse. A primary nonresponse is when the patient was treated with botulinum toxin and doesn’t have any neurotoxic effects from the first treatment or all of the following treatments. A secondary nonresponseis when a patient responds to at least one of the botulinum toxin treatments, but then seems to lose that same response when getting other treatments at a later date. Causes of treatment failure can also be chalked up to various resistances, including those of the immunogenic and non-immunogenic varieties.
There is much information to be disseminated and absorbed on this fascinating, and admittedly complicated topic.
It’s important to trust the aesthetician who understands the potential pitfalls that can compromise the success of the treatment. I am proud to say that I’ve received extensive training on every vital injection procedure, and it’s my pleasure to thoroughly, professionally explain them to you—from initial consultation through successful completion—to deliver your exact results.
