Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat blood vessel abnormalities or malformations. It is performed by injecting an FDA-approved medication directly into the abnormal veins. The medication irritates the lining of the veins which causes the walls of the veins to collapse and stick together. Then, small clots form at these sites and the body eventually absorbs them over a period of months. Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for the very fine tiny veins which are called spider veins. Asclera (0.5% and 1%) is the medication that is injected directly into the veins. This medication causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue causing skin discoloration, which typically fades over time. In many instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed.

Sclerotherapy is frequently done for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of varicose and spider veins. The procedure can also improve related symptoms such as: aching, swelling, burning, and night cramps.
