What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable used to stimulate collagen and improve facial volume and fullness. Sculptra is a gel-like substance made of poly-L-lactic acid. A healthcare provider will inject this filler underneath your skin where you want a fuller or smoother appearance. Poly-L-lactic acid is a collagen stimulator that absorbs into your body a few days after treatment to encourage your cells to produce more collagen. Collagen is a protein in your skin — as well as in your connective tissues, bones and cartilage — that provides structure, support and strength.

5 Things to Know Before Your Sculptra Treatment

1. Sculptra is Different from Other Fillers

While Sculptra is an injectable, it is technically not a filler. Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid to activate your body’s natural collagen production. Collagen production slows down as we age, resulting in duller skin and loss of skin elasticity.

2. Where to Use Sculptra

Sculptra should not be used around the eyes or directly on the lips, but it can be used to improve the appearance of smile lines going from the mouth to the corners of your nose. Because the skin around these areas is delicate, the chances of bumps forming are possible. Sculptra can also be used to smooth wrinkles around the mouth, chin, lateral cheeks, and temples.

3. Long-Lasting Results

Results from Sculptra can last up to two years for some patients, which is a considerably longer amount of time than more traditional fillers. This means less time you have to spend in a doctor’s office and more time to enjoy your beautiful results!

4. Minimally Invasive Procedure

The benefit of a minimally invasive procedure is the short amount of recovery and downtime. Although you may have some initial swelling, redness, and bruising around the injection site, this quickly goes away and will not prevent you from continuing with your regular activities after your procedure.

5. Results Take Time

One thing you should be aware of is that, unlike fillers, results will not be immediate. Your body needs time to build up collagen after your Sculptra injection so it will take a few sessions over the course of a couple of months.

• Massage:

You may be directed to massage the treated area to help ensure an even distribution of the product and prevent potential lumpiness. Patients will be instructed to massage their face for 5 minutes 5 times per day for 5 days after treatment.

Key Considerations What to Expect During Treatment

• Series of Treatments:

You will typically need 2 vials at your initial appointment if you’re over 40 and haven’t been treated with it in the past. Several treatment sessions scheduled weeks apart to achieve optimal results.

• Initial Swelling:

After your injections, you may experience some temporary swelling due to the sterile water used to reconstitute the product.

• Contraindications:

Sculptra should not be used by individuals with a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring, or if they have an active skin rash, infection, or other skin issues. It also should not be used on or around the eyes or directly on the lips.

• Potential Side Effects:

Common side effects include temporary swelling, tenderness, redness, or bruising at the injection sites. Small lumps under the skin can also occur and may be noticeable when pressing on the treated area.
